Company founder Alistair Rampal said, "In a world where spam is an overwhelming presence in everyone's inbox, they may not see or read your e-mail. DidTheyReadIt? is designed to assure you that they did, and to let you do something about it if they didn't."
The service costs $50 per year and is targeted primarily at consumers and home and small business users. It works with any e-mail protocol currently in use, making it possible for Rampell to develop an enterprise version. That's a good thing, according to Dan Goldstein, Rampell's Vice President of Product Development, because "We've had any number of calls from people looking for an enterprise version."
DidTheyReadIt? works by attaching a small tag to an e-mail message. When the message is opened, Rampell's servers are notified, and they are notified again when it closes. Depending on user options, a notification will be sent to the sender when the message is opened, and again when it is closed, indicating if it was read and for how long. The attachment stays with the message if it is forwarded, and repeats the process at the forwarded location.
Windows users can install a program that automatically creates the coding necessary for DidTheyReadIt? to work. Other users must change their e-mail to be sent via the Rampell server by adding "didtheyreadit.com" to the target e-mail address. Various options set at the server change whether and what type of return receipts are sent to the e-mail initiator.
Rampell Software, based in Palm Beach, FL, makes a number of utility programs for Macintosh computers, as well as network utilities.
