Qualcomm Puts E-Mail On Basic Cell Phones

Partnership with Intellisynch and Rockliffe pushes e-mail to mobile users, but only as much as they want.

Qualcomm has teamed up with Intellisynch and Rockliffe to produce Eudora2go, a new sort of e-mail system that enables users of ordinary mobile phones to get their e-mail -- or at least get as much of those messages as they'd like to have on the small screens that output information on those devices.

"We think that the high-priced smart phone technology of today will sooner rather than later be in everyone's ordinary mobile phone," said Eudora vice president Bill Ganon. "Eudora2go today offers true push-based e-mail to smaller business and individual users who don't want to pay for those expensive devices."

Eudora2go delivers only messages from senders that users of the new system select, and only as much of the message they want through a feature called PreMail. The system, which is offered through Verizon Mobile, sends an SMS message to the user that announces the arrival of an e-mail message. PreMail tells the user who sent the message, and the subject line. The user can then decided to retrieve the entire message, or to ignore it

Intellisynch developed the system using Eudora's Brew Java-based middleware product for mobile phone messaging. E-mail messages are "pushed" from almost any server into the Rockliffe-driven Eudora2go.net server, which then handles the message's transportation to the cell phone. Users can select privileged senders using their e-mail client, their originating e-mail server, or the Rockliffe server.

Mail can be forwarded from almost any enterprise- or ISP-based e-mail system. Support is in the product for Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino, Hotmail, MSN Mail, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, NetZero, RoadRunner, Earthlink, and Mindspring. In addition, virtually any IMAP or POP server can be supported.

Several of the mobile phones sold by Verizon are already supported and are available to get the service now. More phones are being added next month. Verizon users of several popular LG and Samsung phones can get the service immediately at $5.99 per month.
