Commtouch announced its spam trends and statistics for the month of July 2005 which were highlighted by a 20.2% higher spam volume than those seen during June. The numbers were based on data from the Commtouch Spam Detection Center.

"While July's spam volumes were 20.2% higher than the previous month, more significant is that we recorded 43.2% more spam in July 2005 than during July 2004”, said Commtouch CEO Gideon Mantel, “which highlights the continuing increase of spam throughout the last 12 months."

Mantel said that Commtouch recorded approximately 35 million spam outbreaks during July, which translates to 1,120,000 outbreaks on an average day. That compares to an average of 791,000 outbreaks per day in July 2004. The peak came on July 19, when Commtouch recorded approximately 1,645,000 outbreaks, more than 50% greater than the 1,054,000 on July 2004's peak day.

China, South Korea and the United States continue to be the top three sources for spam. Spammers in China sent 19.29% of global spam during July 2005, wihle Europe contributed 21.5%. The bulk of European spam originates from EU countries, notably France, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom. The United States has continued to account for nearly 15% of global spam.

The Commtouch Spam Detection Center analyzes an average of 1.5 billion messages each month. More detailed quotable statistics and graphs on global spam trends can be downloaded from .
